Can a straight red card be shown to a player who's already been booked?

i THINK it can, but i'd imagine if it was something that bad that the ref would prefer a second yellow because a club can't appeal against that.

Just thinking about the Cameronesi tackle on Van Persie the other day, that would/SHOULD have been a straight red if he hadn't been booked already.

doesnt 2 yellows = a red anyway, so he'd show the second yellow, then the red just after?

i'm out of my depth

No. A referee can show a straight red even if they have been booked. because:
1/ this shows the significance of the offence
2/ determines the punishemnt off the pitch

Yeah, but if a challenge is so bad that it deserves a striaght red, even if the player's been booked then i reckon a straight red should be shown.

But like i said, a 2nd yellow card sending off can't be appealed, but a straight red can. So in theory a ref should show a second yellow anyway to ensure the player gets punishment

well... its not, any sending off offence is also a bookable one, so if theyve been booked already, would just be another booking.

yes even if the player has been booked he can be given a straight red card should the ref decide the offence committed was deemed a straight red card offence.

Last night when Barcelona drew 1-1 with Real Madrid, Roberto Carlos was booked inside 20 mins, he then gave the ref verbal whilst on a yellow card and received a straight red about 7 or 8 mins later after he brought Larsson down near the box. The ref warned him to stop giving him grief but he ignored the referee and was therefore given full punishment for his stupidity, as if the ref's going to say " Yep! sorry Mr Carlos its not a free kick, fuck it lads let the keeper have it back"

I've just said that.
He wasn't even booked for the penalty foul neither, both cards were for giving the ref stick.

Yes, all the hype before led people to believe it was going to be a classic, killed the game after Carlos was off, Ronaldo's goal was class though, you see so many stirkers try and make the ball go through the keeper, when all you need to do is chip it, the keeper can only jump so high.

You can be shown a straight red card after already being booked.

You can also be sent off/booked after the game has finished, or at half time
