yeh but was using that as a daily runner to bristol (60miles), only got 3 weeks at uni left and have the accord and 306 to use aswell. Thought this would be a bit of fun and worth a few ££'s if in good nick and running order

One of my favourite cars of all time these...shows impeccable taste
Basically look for rust around:
battery tray
behind fuse box
rear boot floor
behind the kit
sils
basically everywhere
Also try and make sure the interior is as original as possible as these are like rocking horse shit. Dashes tend to crack if left in the sun.
In all honesty for that sort of money thats pretty much going to be a dog, S1's are legendery cars far far far far superior to S2s. The only S2's I would ever consider owning over one would be Jim (SVM 286) and Turbo Tonys off PF
The moral of the story is buy one thats structually sound as it will cost far more to fix the body than an engine rebuild. best option is to go for one thats already been restored as once you start doing that its easily cossie money
Thye S1 was one of te definitive hothatches of the 80's and has a soul compared to the lack lustre hot hatches of today
In my opinion if you are not after something to restore just find an S2 easier to find and sell on also as they are more cleaner ones out there and they tend to stand the test of time a bit better than S1's

Nah want something i can have a go at doing things on; use to love my Nova's for that as you were actually able to do things to them; unlike modern cars!!
Will prob pop down and have a look as only 7 miles away; dont want a rot box tho as once that creeps in however much money u throw at it its still gonna keep coming back. Not even lookin to get it on the road straight away as have the Accord and 306 cabriolet at the mo. Did some work on my brother in laws v8 RR vogue today and got me thinking about gettin a toy to play with myself

If you're thinking of getting one of these, you'll have much more fun driving it than trying to sort out all of it's problems if it's a sh*tter.
Best bet is to visit your local monthly RSOC meet and get an idea of the standard of car that can be found.
Cars will fairly regularly arrive with for sale signs on them, so the meets are an ideal forum to find an honest or even potentially prize winning car.
As with anything over about seven years old it's best to buy the best one you can find, and unfortunately this means spending money.
I paid £8,500 for my S2, five and a half years ago when you could pick up a shed for 2 grand or a cleanish standard car for about 4.5k.
However, mine was a one owner car that I had known since it was less than three years old, it was very heavily modified and had just had even more money spent on it.
Most importantly of all, it was black and in absolutely mint condition.
When I bought my car, a bog standard 1 owner car in red sold at the same time for only 500 quid less, and I got a 7K engine build and 2.5k worth of brand new brakes into the bargain.
The RSOC magazine (Rally News) will have pretty much all and any decent RS vehicles that are for sale nationally, listed in it's classified section.
Both S1s and S2s can rust badly.
They don't have to, they just do, and this is usually down to a combination of abuse, poor maintenance and substandard accident repair.
So many were crashed, it's unusual to find one that's never had paint.
Rather than buying an apparently cheap basket case and being dissappointed in the long run, i'd say you'd be better off buying a realy clean car with some nice improvements to power, handling and braking and then enjoy thrashing around in a more complete car.
You'll be able to have your fun still if you realy want to tinker because it will need to be looked after.
You will also without a shadow of a doubt catch the horsepower bug, and you will be endlessly in search of more horsepower and torque like a power crazed madman, and this is where all of your money will be spent for the rest of your days.
Oh, and it will need a new gearbox every 6 months or so, depending on how many miles you do.

Whats the point?! Your only going to sell it as soon as the V5 drops through the letter box with your name on it
