Skilled tradesman are starting to get good money and its about time. I am not sure about your trade VT but I do have a family friend that does a similar job to yourself and he earns lots and lots of money, but then he take son enormous projects with a lot of financial responsibility, without cash flow many couldn't do it.
With my trade (floor laying) I pay around £130 to £180 a day. Unlike you Day rate is more preferred, due to materials costings and no real room for remedials. I pay a decent day rate but then I expect a perfect job.
Problem with our trade is that I am still classed as being very young (30) within the trade as young people are still not coming though, which means tradesman can demand a higher pay cheque.
Back to the thread title though if a lad came to me that was skilled enough for my work and only wanted £90 a day I wiould bite his hands off

it's a scruffy looking job, people associate jobs like that and building to be badly paid, 30k is considered reasonable.
our builders earn silly amounts, but they really do have to earn their money, i prefer to be a bit lazy and in the office than the hard graft and constant work
It's not constant work when your self employed though, I've dug a random worker out of my file and the person earnt from April 6th 2004 - April 5th 2005, £43,390 gross and they worked 218days in that period.
21weeks off work, and the days he did work, £199 a day i'd day a 24hr day for that money
