correct me if I am wrong but they can just say the mount was in need of replacement anyway - as it shouldn't have broken anyway when changing the clutch
IMO they've done you a favour mate...fitting it free of labour (depending how much they charged you for the mount???)

If you didnt authorise for it to be done you dont have to pay for it, or did they ring you and tell you they were going to do it?

If it broke it needed replacing anyway.
If you really want to know get the old mount and test it for metal fatigue. If there is none or if the failure is due to torsion outside normal working tolerances, then it was broken while the work was carried out.
Depends how much you trust the garage. My Corsa invariably goes in with one thing and comes out with three fixed, but its 12 years old.

I would tell them I'm not paying for that as it was fine when I took the car there and that you never requested them to change it.
Also make out you can't afford it as you only had enough for the original bit.
The only thing u can do is speak to them, no point threaten them just talk to them, they may supprise you

Id just pay it personally, better it been done now than it breaking within the next few months then having to get tow truck, part and pay for labour would cost a bomb

Agreed. I only take my car to the local garage because I trust them. If something breaks, it needed replacing anyway so I happily pay them.

i decided to pay the garage..
apparently it was so seized on they had to smash it off to sort the clutch.
so no it wasnt on its way out at all they needed to break the mounting to sort the main job..
still i think they should of called me first.

It would have been polite for them to call you but you could have only said yes anyway so its kinda irrelevant.
Similar thing happened at work today, servicing some guys car and his rear coil spring was snapped. So i fitted one, when he came to get the bill he wasnt expecting it. So he questioned me saying 'how come it needed a spring, i didnt know it was broken?' I was like how often do you check your suspension before you drive off anyway and showed him the old part.
People always assume garages are trying to rip them off.

Like someone else has said, they could have rang you beforehand.
BUT, Punto engine mounts are horrendously weak, someone I know had to have all 3 replaced as there was so much engine movement it was cracking the downpipe through excess movement.
