Don't go diving in, he may have been chased into his car by some local idiots trying to beat him up and he doesn't want any bother in the long run. You never know till you sit him down and grind the facts from him.

We all know what its like when your scared to tell your folks you've done something bad! I was bricking telling my folks i had rolled the car i was given, luckily they were just happy i was still alive, certainly learnt me a lesson.
He will buckle when you sit him down and question him, wont get anywhere jumping down his throat.
