just watched the launch on the news, When complete it will be the largest warship in the navy, and 5 more are on order,
awesome, in recent times with more and more budget cuts from the MoD its good to see that we are still advancing our military.
anyone else see the launch?

o right i see, well they build the hull in a large warehouse, then they launch it, and complete the rest of the construction while the hull is floating on the water.

yeh rzyer's not talking nonsense.
It's also a means of testing the hull before building the whole thing.

Very impressive - One metre clearance on the way out, phew
Can't believe they got it out without incident - was certainly moving too.
Wouldn't have wanted to be in a dinghy nearby when they launched her.
Amazing to see we still have a shipping industry of some sort.
Shame it's all in the service of death and destruction.

Large vessels are launched before being fitted out Myke, to test for seaworthiness, and to allow better access for final fitting, and to free up the build area for the next project to begin.
This particular example will take until 2009 for all the hardware - communications, weaponry, accomodation etc etc - to be completed.

i didn't grasp the concept of them floating the shell then completing it in the water. thought it would've been completed in the bit then flooded out.
was going to say it's already the largest warship in the navy for a moment, but a floating hull doesn't qualify it yet to be a warship i suppose

Lt Cdr Dean Woodruff RN, who has been overseeing Daring's progress, said she was something special for the Royal Navy.
He said: "When she comes into service in 2009, we're going to have the most advanced warship in the world.
How can he say that other countries might make further advances in the 3 years leading pto its launch

because BAe systems is the most advanced naval and aeronautical engineering firm in the world, they create new ideas like no other institute.
The new line of Naval Carriers are being partly built on the Clyde, should be interesting to watch their development.
