usual stuff like decent tyres all round, make sure paint has no bubbles around the extremities of the car like wheel arches and bootlid, turn engine over, make sure its not smokey and rattly and sounds generally healthy. check log book to see if car has had frequent and proper services, make sure timing belt has been changed on time also.
Some cars need certain attention in some areas, especially older ones so it would be good to know which cars you are looking at, then maybe someone could help you further about what to look out for.

better well there isnt much to go wrong really with the engine, since i think it utilises a timing chain rather than a synthetic rubber belt. as per usual follow what i said in my first post, and check B pillars for any signs of cracking.

like cybermonkey says, bubbling of paint is a biggy, somethin i didnt check too much for on my t-reg corsa, bit of a bubble on bootlid around the number plate... now a rust patch, needs to be sorted now i think about it lol
