Had a grinding noise at the beginning of last week when i was moving the car from cold. Assmed that it was a slight build up of corrosion on the disks and the pads were catching it. Would only last about 100 yards and then it would go away.
Gradually got worse throughout the week and i noticed that the rear disks had a big lip on the edge that was rusted up but you could see that the pad had been rubbing on the rusty bit. Fair enough, need new rear brake disks/pads.
Yesterday, the grinding was permanent all way home from work. Popped into local garage and arranged for new rear disks and pads to be fitted first thing this morning.
Dropped car off 8:30am this morning.
Went back 10:30. Major problems getting the new o/s rear disk on as he reckoned it had never been replaced before and the old one was in a right state. Told me to go back for about 12.
Went back at 11:30. Car parked outside, all done, woohooo! ..Or maybe not!
Rear disks/pads/shoes all replaced, but "your car is making an awful noise."
"Yeah i know it's the disks grinding, that's why you've just replaced them."
"Nah, there's a noise coming from the front. Is that what you thought was the disks? Sounds like your drive shaft is going to pop out. Jump in and i'll run you around the block in it..."
"Erm, yes that's the noise. Car is pulling right too so i thought that the rear disk was jammed on and pulling the car back.."
"Nah, that's something to do with the driveshaft."
Got it back in garage and got it jacked up, had a fiddle about with things but cannot pin point the fault, but identified worn top bearing carrier (top of strut), worn drop links, worn track rod end, and probably the full driveshaft.
Advised me to get it diagnosed by Vauxhall who will pinpoint the component that is causing the noise, then he'll get me price of part and fit it etc..
That'll teach me to self-diagnose things although the brakes really did need doing..
Just realised that rear tyres have passed the legal limit too...

Brakes paid for - £200.
Tyres will have to wait.
Driveshaft expected to be about £250.

I got the fronts replaced last year, disks and pads. Disks were warped and pads none existent..
A week after i had the fronts done, i got new pads on the rear and 1 new rear disk. The bloke that done it said the other side was fine so didn't change that disk. That's why i thought that disk must've now been fucked (well it was, but that wasn't causing the noise).. Had the whole lot on both sides overhauled today though.
The mechanic at the garage i went to today was asking why i had so much shit in the back seat (interior plastics bits etc) and i told him i was trying to sell them on eBay and he said i should look for a new driveshaft on eBay to get it cheaper.
Can't find any though. and wouldn't know what i was doing at a scrappy's..
