i have a theory on the black smoke.

We wer told whatever force is present on the island, be it the others or whatever trys to do whatever it can to lure you or hurt you.

I believe the black smoke is a way the island is using as a defence. It represents a persons past and uses bad images from that persons past to weaken them before performing some kind of attack.

I believe eko confronted his fears about his past therefore the smoke or whatever was not able to perform its defence or attack

Michael has post-traunatic stress disorder and is imagining the text on the screen - thats why it appeared blank to Jack - because it was blank.

I believe the black smoke to be a Dhama experiement - maybe nanobots which have escaped, which judges people - it judged Locke and now Mr Eko.
