I had a dream that I was in my office, and we were snowed in, then a news report came over the radio saying there was a massive avalanche and all of a sudden it was speeding towards us and we all went to hide from it but everything went black and I woke up.

Apparently the falling dream is when your brain starts getting starved of oxygen... It gives the sensation of falling. The sudden judder or whatever you feel the simluates hitting the ground, is probably either your body making you move (if you've covered your mouth hence lack of oxygen) or the brain suddenly getting the oxygen and coming back to reality.
Worst one like that I ever had was - I dreamt I was on this big boat. And jumped off the back, into the water and was falling and falling (that sort of sensation) ... then I tried swimming back to the surface but it was too far away, and dark - I couldn't see the surface and then started drowning. Trying to breathe in.
I woke up and had some how moved my pillow so it was suffocating me lol
