de-bolting arches or using a sledgehammer is a perfectly viable option

My wheels are ET43, it's down 40 at the moment but I put a load of stuff in the boot to see what it'd be like -60 the other day and there was a good finger's worth of clearance.

mines is 15's lowered 60 with ET49 wheels, arches trimmed and still it rubs with any weight in the back?

Your wheels sit 6mm further out than mine, that's why.

is it not, the higher the number then the less they stick out

http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/tech/techpage.jsp?techid=101

so if i were to put a 10mm spacer (for example) my wheels would then be ET39 and stick further out

correct

tyre size is usually a big factor a lot of people over look. For example a 195/45 R16 Pirelli p-zero is a lot bigger than a 195/45 R16 Yoko A539. The pirelli has a much squarer profile with excellent rim protection, whereas the A539 has a more sloping sidewall, giving better clearence on the arches but less rim protection (snigger)

the tyres you use make a big difference...
