Taking cars and engines apart and putting them back together again. Though I'm not a mechanic by trade

If I wanted to learn stuff like this at home, is it best to get hold of some crap engine like a 1.2 8v or something and just mess about with it etc.?

Just taking my time and reading the haynes manual, once you've done it once you can do it again alot easier !!!

I just get worried about doing stuff on my engine because if I fuck it up I'm without a motor!
