i have a 1.4 16v sri, and cant afford to insure a bigger engine so im considering doing a few things to get it slightly quicker. Could anyone hazard a guess at the extra power gains from the following and costs please:
Janspeed 4 branch Manifold
De cat pipe
Mantzel/lexmaul inlet - im not sure which suits my car best ?
i already have an induction kit on, and at the moment just a 6x4 oval backbox, so definitely cosidering a straight through pipe.
Basically im just wondering if the power gains from these on a 1.4 16v are worth the money or not ?

i had 115bhp from....
264 cams,
PMC manifold
UNICHIP
Large bore exhaust from manifold back.
You'd really need cams and engine manigement to make the best of all your plans...
with them, 120+

i had 116 with the above (lexmaul, decat, janspeed 4 branch)
plus brosters old remapped ecu, and a viper
i'd say you'll get about 105 with just the mods you mentioned
and it will be noticeable

is it worth it for the money would you say ??
i want to notice the power in 1st and 2nd really rather than top end or just pulling on motorways.
what are gsi's standard bhp?

gsi is 109 bhp
but my 116bho 1.4 struggled with a standard, but stripped 1.6 sport
my torque curve was a bit shit, but the ecu wasnt mapped for my engine
to be honest, you'd be better off just lobbing a 1.6 in, you'll get better power and torque and a better base to work with in the future

sounds like it isnt really worth it then pal... not spending like £500 or whatever if it wont even beat a stripped 1.6 sport/gsi .
ill just have to wait untill i can get insured on a quicker car.
thanks for the help guys.

it was quicker off the mark, but top end it was lacking oomph
it is worth it, but a 1.6 engine conversion is more cost effective

i remember when i raced me m8 i had x16xe and he had x14xe and both with zorst filter etc
tell u what there was nout in it til late 3rd gear and i then pulled past in 4th gear, it makes me laugh cos power/bhp is funny thing, i mean do u actually think all engines are same...
for example book bhp of x16xe is 106bhp, but cos engineering tolerance's and mass production etc etc not every1 will be same, if we was calibrate rolling road same day as rolling roading 20 standard x16xe's i bet on few would make book figure, some 110bhp, some 101bhp etc etc thats why its makes me laugh when ppl fit airfilter/exhaust and say i can really notice it
500 quid is alot of money but i think it is worth spending on these engines they respond well from these manifolds

mike your not going to be able to make your car faster than a 1.6 gsi buy spending a few quid or everyone would be doing it. and by the time you've spent all that money get a few extra horses, you'll get used to it in no time and want bigger again. can you not insure a 1.6? your 20 aint you? should defo be able to insure a 1.6, evan a xe!

wow, for once i agree with you
my 1.4 was rrd with backbox and filter, and got 97.5bhp, same day, brosters 1.4 made 105bhp with full system, superchip and viper
but my 1.6 seems to go as well as his, according to him, and it lacks the headwork which his did
power figures dont mean anything anyway in the real world
i raced teddy back from MK in his 1.6 sport, when i had 1.4 fower, and couldnt keep up after 3rd, and the next day, my car made 116bhp on the rollers, which is more than his (alledgedly) has, and he was missing a backbox, so had less mid range punch
dont fall into the trap of building a car solely on bhp figs, drive other peoples cars, and get a feel for yourself what works and what doesnt

no mate i cant insure a 1.6 and dont want rid of this car yet. dont see much point in buying a 1.6 as it doesnt seem that its much faster than what ive got. im not bothered about top end speeds as i dont use motorways much.

yeh rob its true though ent it
filters and exhausts dont give gains in my opinion they just make the engine run better with power its got.......
u laugh rob lol but when we've disagreed it seems to be about xe's lol, but u lot get me wrong i dont think xe is better than x16xe its just i hate it when ppl slag it off etc and say heavy lump bla bla lol i can make mine handle as well as 106 gti on twisties so good enough for me and me m8 is nutter who owns it.
ppl slate xe on here now but its legend and seems to go from strength to strength even to present day so how can ppl on this site slate it.
anyways back to topic lol

lol, i dont think buying a 1.6 after doing so much bodywork to a 1.4 16v is worth it. they arent quick enough to make me sell this yet and i cant insure one anyway
