I have a mate in the army, who is involved in telecommunications. He loves it, gets good pay, free accomodation and travels whilst away from the front line.
IMO it all depends what you want to do, and its a difficult choice, often sounds like a good thing to do but can be a different world in reality. Especially if you are looking at joining into something where you will be involved in action. I'd have a good hard thing about it before you do anything.

Got 2 mates in the forces, both been in for 4+ years. Can't be bad if they've stayed for that long. Tendancy to get shit on though with christmas duties and long looooong hours. But it also has its perks, plenty of time off (when you finally get some). Good pay too and you learn alot and come out with allsorts of qualifications. One of my mates has loads of truck licenses, artic license, car license etc... Qaulified Lifeguard too. Basic training is meant to be shit but then thats to see if you can handle it, they phase out the rubbish that way. Also depends on what regiment and unit you join. My other mate does changing of the guard at Windsor which he says is good at first but gets reaaaaaaaly tedious. Also parades in ice cold weather aren't much fun apparently.

Few squaddies ruin it for everyone, hence that rep that squaddies are all like that, which they are not.

One of my mates is in the marines. He always tells people that ask him that sometimes it is the best job in the world and sometimes it is fcuking shoot. Lots of time can be spent doing basically nothing which frustrates some people. Having said that the stories he comes back with are nothing short of hilarious
