tyre i've got on at the minute has 83w after all the other sizings, ie 205/45/zr16 83w
The one i was just about to buy until i noticed says
205/45 R16 87V
What all that about? will it still fit?

I think its something to do with the speed rating of the tyre, but i could be wrong

Speed rating the higher the letter the faster the tyre will hndle on the road.

but fitting that tyre would be illegal... the load rating (the 83/6 bit) will be different.. the load rating must be the same across each axel
