did you have a fuel vent valve. small cicular vent that had another smaller pipe coming off of it? is at the back middle of engine. Will try and get a pic

My 1.2 8v has a fuel vent with a carbon canister. Though I converted mine to 2.0...
I think they all have them otherwise the fuel tank would implode...

yeah that is that thing. i em well removed it pretty much the same as that it fell in half so i bined it. the pipes coming off it were full of black granular kind os stuff

Yep, the canister is full of carbon, it's just there to vent the fuel tank and to allow air into the fuel tank to displace the used fuel...

if its that thing with the spring i have pictured above... i still have it in my car with i dont think its connected to anything... or at least it didnt annoy me enough to remove it when i was converting the engine...

i just ripped it outta my car, and bodged some vacuum hose on to join the new valve to the charcol cannister

that another worry ticked off the list then. Mine was binned and a straight connector put in place, it is this that is now connected to the valve i am told i should be using now
