mate has a history degree

says that you can do anything with a history degree, any job etc

now he is looking for a job there is none he can apply for, he has no experience in anything and no jobs say "must have degree" as main requirements

they always ask for experience etc, knowledge of something

All it is useful for is to show he can study/ research etc at a degree level, he will have to be good at interviews etc if he is to land a good job.

Degrees are useful, but nothing beats experience in my opinion

I done mine the best way, I think, Started work from school and built up to my degree day release for six years. It only took me a year longer than all my mates but I have six years experiance as well.

so many people have a degree now that companies want a combination of experience and education. hence alot of courses offer a gap year in industry....

just wondering if people see the history degree a bit of a waste in terms of employment chances

no one would really take on someone with no experience in anything, but had a history degree

those sorts of degree are good as compliments to experience, professional qualifications that use skills needed in todays world of work

especially as these days as most employers are about money/profit

History is like Geography, it can lead to anything because it gives you analytical skills e.t.c... But, 3 year degrees are a bit useless when uni's like mine are making us all do 4 year degrees with a sandwich year in industry so we are not only educated (which on it's own is pretty useless) but are also experinced in something at least...

True Glad i've taken this year out to be honest. Needed a break and the experience will look good on my CV.

People who take stupid degrees are just wasting there time. The idea is to get a better job at the end or the job they want to do

i wanted to do a degree in architecture, but is something like 6-7yrs

have spent last 6 in the industry doing it all tho

may go get the RIBA qualification one day tho, could start my own practice then

i'd rather not go to Uni if i was unsure what i wanted from it, think too many people go under false believes/hopes

History is very highly regarded as a degree as its the skill set rather than the subject thats important.

If its from a good Uni and he has good A Levels then it'll get him an interview for any job.

yes you can teach history - people who do art degree's need their genitals attached to electrodes.

one thing getting a degree is not really that hard so if someone says I've got a degree take it with a pinch of salt.

degrees dont really mean that much nowadays.... i have one and it only comes in handy when applying for a job as most jobs ask for degree-educated applicants.

without my degree it would mean i couldnt apply for most jobs within the software development industry as i only have 2 years commerical experience....

i think what is crucial is a placement year out or as much experience as u can get whilst being at uni.

dunno why ppl think that a history degree can get u any job.... at least do a degree in sumthing u enjoy and sumthing that is at least half related to the career u wish to go into
