whey protein is fast absorbing and one of the best quality proteins around. You can get egg protein powder aswell as casienated protein which is slow releasing and quite a 'cheap' source. You may aswell be eating eggs and drinking milk with those two.

Only supps I take are myoplex deluxe...52g protein per serving, creatine, L-Glutamine and a multi vit. Only take the myoplex because im sick of eating brown rice and boiled chicken/turkey breast lol its an easy and more varied way to increase ur protein intake.

brown rice is a good source of low G.I carbs (complex). Chicken/turkey is probably your best bet for an easier way of getting protein. Whey is good if you are on the go and sometimes dont have time to prepare a meal or something.

I've put on a slight "belly" over summer but i'm guessin thats down to student life and too much drink

My arms are slightly bigger in the few months i've been going to the gym, but I'm still not 100% on what weights / machines to focus on

Also do you go to the gy often as its best to get as big as you can without suplements and then once you ntocie the rate of muscle growth/strength has rapidly decreased move onto the suplements.

I would at first control your diet and see if that makes a change then think about using suplements.

i dont think you really need to go onto supplements in all honesty, you need to focus on turning the weight u have thats fat into muscle, just change your gym regime a little to suit and then work until you've reached a plateu where u can't get any bigger/more from your body, then assess whether your happy or not and whether you want to go bigger? if so then as fad says look at supplements because they're expensive if you do it right and you need to stick at them you can't buy them 1 month then not the next it needs to be constant even then u cud probably get the results u want from changing your diet to a more protein rich one with tuna, chicken .etc

For mass..forget machine weights and focus on free weights. Bench (variate eg incline) Squats, Dumbells, barbells, military press etc etc, as free weights stimulate the stabiliser muscles as well as the actual muscle you are wishing to work. Low reps with heavy challenging weights, good diet with alot of 'good calories' not calories from junk and high protien intake. I have no idea what you weigh, but I am consuming 250g protein a day, I used to weigh 10st and am now 12st 6, my upper body is alot bigger than it was, my chest particularly, as are my legs, back etc. Try www.bodybuilding.com for tips/info.

protein suplementation would be highly dependent on your activity loevels and basic daily diet.

How serious are you on your diet already, do you record what you eat, and monitor injested levels of CHO, Fat, Protein ect?

The matabolism of the body has a limit to the level of protein it can convert adequatly. It is pointless injesting over this level as the excess will be converted into circulating fat.
