Im stuck with a problem which one of our PCs has.
It is unable to open/run any .exe .com files, all the shortcuts on the desktops have removed there icon pictures and has the standard windows icon and are renamed to .lnk (short cuts), the targets for them are all correct, but as i said i cant run .exe files.
Ive ran a numerous amount of virus + spyware scanners, and i aint managed to find anything.
I cant get into regedit either.... help 
Anyone have any ideas

i know... but its sooo much work after installing programs, setting it all up.
im really not in the mood to be doing that.

You should convince your company to invest in Symantec Solution Suite (ghost).
The initial setup takes quite a while depending on number of users but the potienal benefits are awesome.
If a user has a problem that takes more than 5mins to fix, i just send the command and it resets the machine in less than 5 mins

i had this problem, in the end i just started in safe mode and restored it to a back up from 3 days before it started happening!

thanks guys.
Theres nothing running that shouldnt.
Ive also ran it in safe mode, but its no different, and i cant access anything.
The only program that seems to work (odly enough) is microsoft outlook. no other programs or microsoft programs work.
Im almost certain its a registry error now
I cant install any registry programs on there. Does anyone know for a online registry scanner / repairer?

ur best bet is to start in safe mode and do a system restore to before it started happening

Yes you can use Safe Mode with Windows 2000. Hold down F8 just before your system starts to boot Windows.
I would just format. You could spend all messing with it and not find the prob.

of you cannot do this there is nothign left to do but reinatall windows
* Click Start, Run and type Command
* Type the following and then press Enter after typing each one:
* cd\windows
* regedit
* Navigate to and select the following key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ exefile \ shell \ open \ command
* Double-click the (Default) value in the right pane
* Delete the current value data, and then type:
"%1" %* [with quotes]
(ie., quote-percent-one-quote-space-percent-asterisk.)
* Navigate to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe
* In the right-pane, set (default) to exefile
* Exit the Registry Editor.
If you're unable to launch Regedit.exe even from Command Prompt, try this:
copy regedit.exe regedit.com
regedit.com
Alternately, you may download fixreg.com from Grisoft.com site and run it. This utility fixes the exefile association in the registry automatically.

It sounds seriously Virus like imo. I'd just bite the bullet and blank the damn thing.
The other option is to take the hard disk out and stick it in another NON used machine as a slave drive and run a ful virus scan on it from the Primary drive.

but like i said in the start, i cant open .com files... and unfortunatly all of that refers to .com files (command.com, fixreg.com etc)

done that, shared the drive and scanned it from my PC with 2 very good AV packages, and also adware and microsoft spyware.

By now it should be formated, new os, all updates, office and any other software installed and back with the user!

If you can access the run box, you can edit the registry from there, its a problem with the registry a friends pc had this a while back, some how the adminstrator things had kicked in and locked down all .exe and bats etc, do a few searches for it on google, you should find the command prompt line that you'll need to open the registry

Nope, i mearly dont have the time.
Ive rang up someone else to come in and do it for me. I was just interested if anyone knew for a quick fix.
yes CM, win2k pro, sp4, and I.E 5.5.
He's started reformatting it now, but its gonna need my input after the install etc.

there have been a fre red problems recently of win2k running 5.5 because of recent updates to SP4, look into it
