It is to drive it on the road but there's no reason why it couldn't have plates on before delivery assuming it wasn't going to be drive on the highway.
My mate picks up his 55 plate in a few weeks -

I saw an 05 reg yellow (that stunning yellow) clio 182 on the 25th February this year but also with those white and red demo plates on so I assume it is as Ian said

55' plate cars can be driven on any road if they also have the trade plates attatched to them, my old man delivered a 55 Jag to a dealership on wednesday with his trade plates on it. Plus he said he's seen lots parked up in compounds such as Inscape, which i think is in northamptonshire.

Inchape - Thats our holding compound in Corby. All our new cars go through there before delivery

any1 else got a new un?
Collected my Dad's new V8 MG yesterday.
Would have been on the 1st, but the bloody mail dragged it's heels getting the insurance docs through and the dealer won't release new cars without tax and insurance so after all the prep and waiting it ended up happening a day late
Still, she's an absolute f*cking animal and well worth the wait so
Oh and a F.A.O. JR, I can absolutely confirm that tyre black deffo 'aint good for adhesion. Especially when you're trying to get 302 lb ft onto the road
