Posted here before that I was having electrical issues.
Well after much sodding about I have worked out the following. If I start the car for a journey with my head unit on then my cig lighter only gets 2.5 volts running through it! If I drive for 2 mins, then turn the head unit on, all is fine till I arrive at location then switch off. I find on the return journey I just cant get power. Even if the cars idle for more than 2 mins I lose power to the cig lighter. At night I cant get power till I switch my lights off
I know when it happens as I have a snooper plugged in all the time, so I can see when it shuts down, and starts up.
I also have a amp plugged in.
It must be that the alternator cant put enough power back into the battery? If this is the case can I take one out of a bigger car (cav, calibra)?
Any advice would be great as its real frustrating.
ps Its a new high power battery.

standard alternator should be able to cope, it might just be nackered. The way to test it start the car and wait till its warm, then turn everything on. meaning the fan, heated rear screen, headlights & foglights. Then check the voltage at the battery terminals using a multimeter. it should be between 13.5 and 14.5. Anything lower than 13.5 and it might be starting to give up the ghost

Pretty easy. take off air filter box & pipe, have a poke round it and slacken off the bolts enuf so that the belt goes slack and u can take the belt off. then undo rest of the bolts (some at top, one long one at the bottom) then turn it over, undo the terminals then lift the bugger out
