the car has lost abit of coolant (probably about a centimetre on the tank), is this normal this time of year and can i just top it up?

yes but make sure the engine is cold when you do it
and keep an eye on it and look for leaks at same time
its a fact water evaporates when its hot

yup top it up. might have a slight, ever so slight leak. mine hasnt dropped any, but it dont get that hot up in cumbria

yeh ill keep an eye out for any leaks. The tank doesnt have any markings for min and max so should i fill it 3/4 or there abouts? and paul, this is a question you didnt know the answer to

if you fill it too much it will only come out of the overflow

Fill it to the half way mark in the tank.
And you have a leak as the level shouldnt drop any if it all.

i noticed some white residue around the cap so it could be that..
