very interesting article, and makes you think.. seeing as i'm close to finishing the rebuild of the ca18det (with a smaller turbo unfortunately )
i'm interested to see proper techie's views on this, a perfect ring seal is what i'm after.

worry about not letting the car idle for long periods, and make sure it gets a spread of different loads on the first 100-200miles or so. Just jumping on the motorway and sitting at 60mph is pointless, and will not give a proper ring seal - and as you rightly say, your looking to wear in the piston rings most importantly after an engine re-build.
Find a nice long gentle hill, on a quiet A road, and repeatedly accelerate up it at different throttle positions, slowly building up the rpm's

varied and increased loads is the key

but what kind of power and rpm should be put down on the run in ? most will say not above 3k rpm for first few hundred etc.. i don't think i'll cane the arse off it, but i don't wanna bitch about

obviously keep the revs as low as possible to start with, 3k sounds reasonable, but as its a turbo engine your going to have to use boost at some point.
where do you expect full boost?

Imo you'll have to go on boost at least 10 times in the first 100 miles it's not gonna do it much harm plus u might need to overtake

the site you posted makes interesting reading
That fella reckons you have 20 miles to get a decent ring seal... but how many cars has he worked on?
To be fair, i have only ever run in motocross bikes after new piston rings, and I know your supposed to use all the gears, and all the powerband as soon as the bike is up to operating temperature...
One very good point which I missed is to use the engine to do most of the braking for the first few vital miles... slow down the gears gently though!!
