smith = blacksmiths
butcher = well at a guess i would have to say train driver..

but a lot of the names were also given to people in medieval times.. depending on what job they did around the town/manner/castle is what they had as a surname, usually getting shortened down too for todays modern man/woman

Most names for things/word have latin meanings to them or something something i'm speaking crap.

I don't know.

If i ever found a creature that no-one knew it'd be named after me, or the noise it makes. E.g. a Dog would be called a Woof
