how do i change the colour of something to black, like shiny painted black,
ie changing a car from say red, or blue, to black

i've worked with photoshop for 3 years, and the only way you can get a car to look black (properly) is digitaly paint it

don't trust this man  play with brightness/contrast and hue/saturation

lasso all you want, the 'shift' 'U' to desaturate
then darken with brightness blah blah
doesnt come out great like imo
