Now got the head off, i notice that there's a slight bit of movement of the pistons at the top of the stroke, up and down looking at the block from the exhaust side, is this normal? or is it boogered

a bit of pistons wobble you mean? you'll have a bit as you need to a have a certain amount of clearance, just means it's slightly worn. 150k bottom end has a fair amount of wobble in it, will cause piston slap, but will still run.
Best pull them out then measre the bores to makre sure the bores aren't worn too bad.
I know you said the hone corss hatch is stil there, it's always there so not a good sign in itself being there.

its a very slight movement laterally in the bores, no sign of oil etc getting through though, ahh fekk it, i'll rip it all apart. In no rush to chuck it in anyways

Well like I said I've got a 150k 20Xe I work on with a fair amount of wobble still making good compression and still make stock power.
Depends if you want to TB etc in the future, you can get away with lots of sloppiness running std power, but not on TB's

amusingly those running std engin erebuild cause they can afford to but don't need to,
and those TBing don't cause they can't afford to when they need to

as long as your installing OE stuff back in if should be simple enough to knock back together.....
