If you explain all your employment history (starting with the most recent employer) and describe all the skills you have gained in each job, why you think you will be a good worker within their organisation.
If you explain your hobbies and what skills your best at (i.e. Team working, working on your own, organising work etc), signing it off I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
Also, if you include when you are available to 1. start the job and 2. to go along for interviews etc.
P.S. All the above can be done on one A4 page and signed at the bottom. They have to be able to glance at it (to chose the best candidate for interviews quickly) and then you can give them more info at the interview!!
Hope this all helps you.
Ashley

Isnt that what your CV is for?
A covering letter is just that! A simple letter to explain why you are sending them a CV!

some thing like this:
24 Mansfield Drive,
Cheadlee,
Manchester M23 4DJ.
Tel: (0161) 234 1234
Miss Janet Timms,
3 January, 2005
Personnel Manager,
Oldbury Foods Limited,
346 Wood Road,
Manchester,
M2 3LL.
Dear Miss Timms,
I am writing to enquire whether you have a vacancy in your company for a Quality Assurance Manager. I enclose a copy of my CV for your consideration.
As you will see from my CV, I am currently working for Gepo Foods as the Senior Quality Assurance Technician. In my present position I am responsible for managing all quality assurance in Gepo Foods' Manchester factory. I have worked closely with the Production Department and have been able to identify problems before they affected production deadlines.
Over the last year I have implemented BS5750/ISO 9000 throughout our factory. This meant rewriting many of the company's procedures and in some cases creating new procedures. I successfully obtained accreditation at the first attempt within the Board's six-month timescale.
With my proven ability to manage and maintain the highest QA standards whilst also minimising costs, I feel that I would be able to make a significant contribution to your company's management team.
I would be grateful if you would contact me if you have any vacancies in your company, or keep my information on file in case of future openings. I would welcome hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,

However, if you send it all in one letter - they can look at it quickly and decide who is the best candidate for an interview... what i was meaning was you can just use one page to do the whole thing instead of more...

CVs are worth shiot most people don't read them and get chucked in the bin have to put important info in the covering letter so there will read your cv, but then it depends on the job your going for.

The company i work for gets thousands of cv's a day.
When they have a cover letter we tends to check its not from India and the persons paid someone to put it into english then either deleted from the system or thrown away.
Just make it simple if anything an state what position your going for.
