sounds really loud now, well annoyin, and doesnt sound to healthy.

Could be a number of things? Look around the cambelt/pulley area and check for probs or like me you could have a very noisy car and less power which turned out to be a blown head gasket between cylinders££
Most probably a misssfire though (ignition timing out). Could also be the cam folowers (or hydraulic lifters need changing) which sorted my tappety noisy engine out
