coming around a corner 2nite in my local town, didnt take it any faster than usual, its a very tight apex, well tonight dont know what happened but I took the corner, and the rea end stepped out, had me fighting for control not to mount the kerb one side, and pile into a wall the other side of the road 
Ok so its standard springs and the rear tyres are now down to the limits, woul da set of new tyres and maybe harder springs (PI) sort this unstable cornering? Not a big budget at all

harder springs will make car stiffer. you'll slide more.

harder springs will make it worst, lower profile and good tyres will make it grip better

nah harder springs (lower too) - will help... I spun my old corsa on standard springs and shocks on a roundabout as it was like a S bend... I turned the car left then right onto the roundabout and the soft rolly polly suspension made it go all over the place (back end came out and wehay - round we go)...
But yeh tyres help big time too... wide and decent make.

My old Corsa was lowered 35mm on Chassis Dynamics springs (ie. Avo) and had 15" wheels with 195/45/15 Avon ZV1 tyres. That car handled like a go-kart, I could do up to about 50mph or so round a corner and the back-end would not come out at all. If I did that when it was on standard springs and 13" steel rims I'd probably be dead by now.

The lower you take your car and the harder the suspension, the more lateral force you apply. You will have better handling but it will most likely oversteer.

learn to corner slower, or just play with the oversteer
my back end will slide, but only if you back off on a roundabout, its fine up to about 45 round roundabouts too
thats on FK springs at the back, koni kit front, and 6.5x16's with 195/45/16 Avons
just learn where the limit is, and drive under it
or buy some new wheels and tyres

mine had a job to slide unless i cause it to, e.g. handbrake of go into a roundabout and just before the corner come of the accelerator causing the weight to shift to the front helping my arse slide out... but thats for fun 
as robmarriot said learn the limit and go below it, or learn how to deal with it when something goes wrong u shudnt be doing them speeds unless u know what to do when ure car does slide out .etc
that said lowering springs will lower ure centre of gravity making it handle better but u shud try and get some good tyres to help u grip

tyres are the best safety feature, i work for a tyre fitters, and we get loads of people coming in asking why they keep sliding, and its cos they either have cheap, shitty tyres, or no tread at all
even on the legal limit, your tyres are 60% less grippy than new ones, and it makes loads of difference
we have a vid at work, with 2 cars, one on part worns, and one on fresh ones, and the stopping distances, and speeds that a slide happens are amazingly different between the two
i never buy cheap tyres, its just not worth skimping on safety

I have Yokohama S306 tyres at the moment, 185/60/R14's, am ordring the new tyres next week.
I kinda like the look of the A539's (yet more expensive though, cant wait till I finish college  )

If you're on a budget then save the suspension money and buy proper tyres. Yokos won't save you in the wet as they're worse than most in anything other than complete dryness.
Alternatively, slow down.

My mate says that cornering is improved using low-pro tyres, due to the fact there is less sidewall flex - have to agree there, so am looking at getting a set of 16's in summer.
For now though, what good tyres can you recommend?

i had 205 40 15 khumo something or other on ma astra, and it was dropped 80 sumthin on coilovers, went round corners at silly speeds, once u know how far u can take it thats when the fun begins

Don't forget tyre size affects your gearing. Don't go too small. If anything you want the front and back to have the same tendancy so that the car is balanced, not get absolute grip as such. If it handles badly with one particular profile all around now, it'll have the same behaviour (all be it at larger speeds) with smaller sidewalls. If you really want to get good handling you do need to invest in good suspension and a stiff chassis but tyres are the priority if they're unsafe at the moment.

tyres will help alot, deffo get a suspension kit and few strut braces, m8's glanza v has 4 stut braces lol, thing is a weapon on a track lol
