Was helping a friend fix up his k & n filter this afternoon.... took off his old filter to fine this gash... looks like its been patched or somit it missing any ideas 
Everything around that area seems fine also nothing rubbing ect...

Looks like it's been worn through... only thing I can think of around that area would be the auxiliary drive belt

i aint burnt or melted.... it is very smooth as if somit has been rubbing it over time or took a quick clean cut from it....... i took a look at the belt ash but its totaly fine, nothing to show its the problem, or has been

Correct me, if i am wrong:
Isn't a rubber nipple at this place to mount the filter to the car?

I'll correct you cos you're wrong... the ruber mount goes through the bracket bit you can see at the top left in the first pic...
The hole is next to the timing belt end of the engine.

would it be possible to push the filter to the belt ash, or is to fixed with the rubber mount.....
he had a knock with a seagul not to long ago, it pushed the head lamp in and broke its mounts, would it be possile to push the filter close the the belt as the head llight came into the bay

Surely you should be able to see the position it came fof from and see what parts fouling with it there..

yeah thats what i thought..... but nothing shows of contact.... to cause somit so deep into the fillter u would think both would take damage, or leave some plastic burns or black contact marks

Someone has tried fitting it with the engine running and the side cover off and caught it on the cam belt pulleys?

couldnt someone have removed the inner arch mud guard thing and maybe it caught on his tyre at one stage over a bump or something :S i dunno it looks like its been melted by something rubbin on it very fast
