what are the rules and regs for riding one of these.

i had a cbt, 3 years ago, so thats out of date. i am 21 in may, what would i need to do to ride one? i believe take a test when 21 to take off the L plates, or use just a cbt with L plates and a restriction?

If you have a full driving license you can ride anything up to a 125 with L plates and no CBT.

to clear up

you can ride a 50cc scooter/bike on a car licence provided you got it before a certain date

otherwise you need CBT and l plates and to be over 17 to ride upto a 125cc

you can ride a 50cc moped at 16 with l plates and CBT provided it is restricted

If you passed your driving test before February 2001 you are entitled to ride a 50 cc bike without L plates.
You are also entitled to ride a 125cc but you must have L plates.

If you need any further info take a look at this website http://www.dsa.gov.uk/FAQs.asp?cat=33

I only thought I was entitled to ride a 50cc so I have one of those but I was wrong
