Once you've flattened an image is there any way of getting the layers back?

I want to change the scale of a layer.

Actually that didn't work - the bit I want to change is set as the background and is locked.

Anyway of unlocking it?

If you wanna unlock the background you double click it (the actual background layer), and a little namebox pops up and name it "layer 0" then you can edit it.
