i know its a small heated wire which gets cooled down when the air from the filter passes it to convert the cooling rate into air flow but what does it control, and what would happen if it were to fail?

MAF is mass air flow. it measures the flow of air and according to the voltage output of the device and other sensors the ECU will work out the air/fuel ratio and correct accordingly
