What is the difference between 2-D and 3-D engine mapping?

Im making an educated guess by sayin 2D mapping only takes into consideration very few values relayed by the multiple sensors under the bonnet, namely the MAP sensor and Crank shaft sensor measuring the load on the engine and the speed to calculate the opening times of the injectors. where as 3D would take values from multiple sensors to equate the correct ratios.

When they get it on the screen, 3D mapping looks pretty, 2D mapping looks pish.
