I always thought the car just had to have a MOT in the last 6 months. Guess the best way to find out would be to ask in the local DVLA office.

my dad got asked to have a vehical inspecion(sp) but that was because the car was off the road for ages, not hard really, they just looked out the windw at the car to chec kthe colour and model, no biggie, ways around everything, but yeah the car does need an mot

They don't always do an inspection, but that probably depends on the history of the donor car. The DVLA know whether its been taxed over the previous months & years, so whether it actully exists, other than on a piece of paper. I did know a guy who swapped the plates on a mates Morris Minor to get a valid MOT for a Morris Minor log book he had (but no car) and then did a transfer to his own motor using that MOT & log book. That was a few years ago, and I'm sure they're much stricter now.

when you buy a "private" plate it belongs to the car, not to whoever owns the car

yes mate unless you take out insurance for the plate like me
ive heard of people with 10k plates loosing them once a car is written off as it belongs to the car UNLESS you have a special agreement with the insurance company that entitles you to the plate

If your car gets written off you can ask your insurance company for a letter saying they have no interest in the plate and that it may be retained by you. I had to get this sorted after my g/f wrote off her last car, insurance company were more than happy to provide the letter (after getting through to someone who actually knew what they were doing!!)
