u know that horrible sound old deisels make first thing in the morning?

Had my 20XE head skimmed ported and polished, ports matched blah blah etc, ive put it all back together and had it idling for over an hour now and it still sounds horrendus (sp)

drove it up the rd and back and it seems to run fine, all 4 cylinders firing and revs up nice and quick.

is it possible that the timing is ever so slightly out and the valves are just touching the pistons or is it more likely that its just taking the oil ages to get round the tappets n stuff?

also im running a mild cam so there isnt a great deal of clearence in there, one at the top here, the Q42H -

http://www.qednet.demon.co.uk/xe/cams.htm

i dont remember it sounding this bad after i i didnt drive it for 2 weeks

ive checked the timing loads of times, even had a big ass screwdriver down cyl no 1 to check the timing marks themselves are right, i can get a vid clip of it if anyone fancies hosting it?

if the valves were touching the pistons you'd know about it.... the engine would be fucked.... bent valves etc....

Timing can be about 3 teeth out before contact is made..... normally

dont put fully synthetic as its too thin and will tap louder...engine will be a little tappier due to the cams not a hell of a lot tho....

Daimo has this same prob which i think was down to the fact his head just sat around for ages with the lifters exposed

drive it around for a bit and mayb get the timing checked...

altho mine went all tappy and it turned out to be oil starvation through a fucked oil pmup and left me with a huge bill doh

think the lifters are supposed to be sat in an oil bath for 48hours ( i may have guessed that figure) before they are put back into the head so that the oil gets in to them properly. as i understand, the hole that the oill goes in is pretty small and they take a while to fill up.

take it out for like a 10 miles drive and see if it quietens.

i'm dreading what mine is going to sound like TBH. the engine has not been run for about 3months, and the head was out for a fair few weeks.
the lifters were bathed in oil, but i dunno how much of it will still be in them as it was reassembled over a month ago, and i presume it drains out slowly.
