As some of you might know i went and looked at an Astra coupe yesterday, i didn't realise until i got there that it had a Tv touch screen, and a big rockford fosgate amp. This has put me off a bit.

The car has done 38k, but i don't know if its been thrashed for 38k, or maintained well. How would i find out? Do AA checks tell you things like this?

The only way to tell if its been thrashed is to check the usual things,

- Rev the engine to see if the rev counter falls back down or sticks.

- Look at the steering wheel and check if its still dull or gone shiny, likewise with gearlever.

- Check bonnet for stonechips etc.

- Check panels for accident repair or respray.

The above should give an indication if the cars been thrashed.

I didn't do the rev thing...... It didn't have any signs of repair work. And there were a few stone chips, but nothing out of the ordinary for a car which has done 38k.

Why would the revs stick? rather than fall back down if its been thrashed?

Hmm, i might get the AA to check it out. If it turns out its been thrashed then i wont buy it, and the £150 to the AA will be wasted :S

can you explain these a little more, how will the rev counter stick if its been thrashed, and when you mean gone shiney you mean where its worn down from too much handling?

Finally stonechips on the bonnet, how is that a sign of thrashing, thought it would be a normal thing on most cars?

cheers

I understand the shiny steering wheel thing, but surely thats down to mileage rather than how its driven ? Stonechips are alot worse at high speed willay, hense a thrashed car having more.
