How do you get that affect from the cloud? is that a camera setting or photoshop? or just really dark clouds

A little bit of all three. 
 
I under exposed the image a little so the sky appeared darker then I used a flash to fill the foreground. 
Then I balanced it out a bit in photoshop.

Yes mate. This was taken at 300, then just cropped at 100% to fill the frame better.

I bought a load of Cokin P-series filters from TP recently and had my first ever play around with them last weekend. These were all shot with a Cokin ND8 grad and Polariser.

I got myself a cord so I can play about with off camera flash too. 
Shooting a bar/club tonight, so i'll see how I get on.
