There is absolutely nothing that beats technique, once you get that right, everything else will come on at its own pace.
Its not something you can compare with other people either as everyone develops at their own rate.

I went for a few months last year. I was on a course of prescribed steroids so got quite big lol. Ended up with a fair amount ofbruising on my chest from the weights I was bench pressing. I'm off them now so going to start up again.

Briuising on your chest from bench pressing? You should not be bouncing the bar off your chest after every rep? all that will lead to is injury, back injuries etc from poor form trying to push up on the rebound.

if you have gone so far down the bar touched your chest you have gone to far down there will be no pressure on your muscles and that will acheve nothing. it will be like having a short rest before each rep

Ideally you want the bar to touch your chest, as you are then using the full extension of the muscles.
Obviously you dont want it resting there, thats just plain old cheating. And it hurts.

i was going gym twice a week but have had to slow it down a little over the last few weeks because of my college work.
ive kept to a decent diet, ie lots of chicken for lunch and tea, cut out all the crap i used to eat like crisps, chocolate, biscuits, fizzy stuff ect
i also play football twice/three times a week and go joggin as often as i can (well not at the moment because of it being so cold), so i do keep quiet trim neway
going from skinny to being quiet toned and bigger is awesome the girls love it neway and im definatly addicted cant wait to get my new car so i can get to the gym alot easier and also catch up at college so ive got some free time again!

no not correct, there is no need for the bar to touch your chest, thats a common missconception. id say it should stop 1 to 2 inches above your chest, the same with any exercises, try not to let your muscles get into that "rest position" they need to be under constant use throughout your reps!

what m333ks d said.
if you clenche your fist and place your thumb inline with your nipples thats roughly how low you want the bar to be. when you bring the bar up to complete your rep DONT lock your elbows at the top. try and have a nice wide grip on the bar aswell

Just got back from the gym! Upped my weights today so im happy. Its all about the compound movements, only thing i hate with my gym is they dont have a squat rack or a suitable deadlift area, bench press/squat has to be done on this machine with the bar on runners. The bar is like 30kg because you pushing it up the runners it feels horrible. Best is when people don't read the sign saying the bar is the equivalent of 30kg, so they walk up acting all tough putting 20kg on each side then wondering why they can't get it off their chest.
I take whey protein (Currently using maximuscles promax), Thermobol (to help weight management), Multi-vitamins, Fish Oil capsules and Flax seed oil. Also follow a strict diet obviously as thats the most important!

I'm not talking about it being at a rest position on your chest, not only is it cheating, it hurts.

bar never touches my chest, i stop about an inch before it, saw someone in the gym today doing what they call the "westside press" like people do it in prisons, arched his back off the bench completely and pretty much used his legs/body to lift the bar. Still people said well done because he did it with a heavy weight (not sure what it was) nearly said "i'd love to see you do that with the right form"

adz9 no matter how much the smith machine says the bar weighs, a proper olympic style bench is alot harder and you will have to drop down in weight when you use one.
oh and i hate it when people do that "westside press" and let there body meet the bar when its only about 1/2 way down
