1st link I came across on a recruitment site for a search on IT jobs in Scotland.
Graduate job, straight from uni, does say some extra curicular experience would be good, which I would say comes under the limited experience of the original question.
28.5k + 10k bonuses in the 1st 2 years obv isn't almost 30k a year. Thats with about 20 secs of lookin.
So you can all gtf and not argue unless you know what you are talking about in future.

Thats only 26k. No offence mate but you need to look at the wider picture. Laying floors is dogs work. Boring, repetitive, uncomfortable. In that sort of job what he earns now is all he'll ever earn. I would rather work with interesting and intelligent people and do something with some prestige and some prospects.
I am a qualified joiner started since i left school now 21 on 24k with no stress easy work which is different every day have a great laugh on sites. I am going back to college to get a hnd in building studies where i can choose from a wide range of jobs with prestige and prospects eg architect quantities surveyer ect. Just cause you do not go to uni does not mean you have no prospects you just choose a different way it is down to the person.

I would hope that after spending 4 years at uni I would be earning at least £20k when I finish. Will have to find out how valuable a BSc in industrial design and technology is.... in 4 years time

That's what my bf is doing computing science. I decided not to go to uni as i don't think you need a degree to get a well paid job. I just think you need determination. Look at Richard branson. He left school at 15 (dunno how i know that)!! He's minted

I care not about K-Maps or the internal clock cycles of a CPU. Speaking to Adi-Sri (does the same course at Reading but is in his final year) - he agree's with me the subject is crap and feels he wished he hadn't bothered.
Add this with the fact that having a degree isn't as important as it used to be and it does make you feel like why am I even bothering? I guess I've just lost interest in a subject that I've been studying for so many years.
Know the feeling mate. In my second year of a Mechanical and Automotive engineering degree at Birmingham University, and ive never been so bored in my life. Some of the work we do is awful, which isnt helped by the lecturers who cant lecture very well .
How foolish i was thinking that there would be some "hands on" work on the course, or we'd be learning interesting stuff, but no. It's all dull, and uninspiring, making it difficult to have the will power to put the effort in and learn it. hoping to do ok this year and pass everything, then take next year out to re-focus, earn some money, and just prepare myself to get on with it in the last year.
Interesting though how many times we were told that engineering is a good route to take, as good engineers are sought after and theres a shortage. Ive applied for a handfull of places that have appealed to me for work experiance, only to be turned down due to them not having any placements, or having few placements that have already been filled. Hardly an industry "crying out for engineers".

theres a company out in usa which dismantle and sell parts of 18 wheelers, the actual ppl who break em up earn upto £60k, this is a very small company who earn lots of money, so its not a dreadful job. the way i see it is u aint gonna b directors etc and if ur like me wish to excel in life then imo the only way to shape your own future is become an entreprenur. cos the roof on ur salary is skyhigh. just my opinion though

A degree is good, but nothing matches decent experience at the end of the day, have both and you stand a chance of getting £30k straight out of uni

If I did any degree and went in for a computing job, I'd expect 26-30k.
I would like to be on that kind of money once I've reeached the age I would be if I did go to uni. As I am now in the industry doing networking (almost been in it for a year). Hopefully by that age I would of cracked my CCNA (currently studying for) and various other certs.
Cheers.

I dont think everyone who chooses to go to uni does it because they expect to get a good wage when they come out of the other side.
I went because I knew it would be valuable but most of all because it would be enjoyable!
My four years at uni have to be the best four years of my life and now Im working I miss it loads! It was all about the experience for me - the education was just a part of this. I made loads of mates, had a wicked social life (which I dont now Im working and have to pay mortgage etc) and enjoyed the course too.
It got me a good job at the end of it and to be honest, most of the job adverts in my line of business require a degree. Yeah, I probably could be on the same money now if Id left school at 16 and taken up a trade but I would have missed out on the best four years I have ever had!
If I came into a lot of money now Id seriously consider enrolling for another four years!

yeah really the big temptation about going to uni for me is the social life. But then I remember about all the fucking essays

the question I would have to ask is that 28k as soon as you start or after you finsh your training with the company?
I doub't doubt that you can earn 30k I just don't think your going to walk straight from uni into a job that pays that without some serious luck or if you happen to know someone. if you get it then thats well done.
