Yeah i've always had a soft spot with the 172/182 easily the best handling car i've driven..better than my old 106 GTI.
Driving position is a bit funny though..clutch is high etc?

I hate clios, driving position is crap, clutch is crap, build quality is crap, it's good at what it's for though.
I don't think they aren't good on fuel, I know they aren't.
Mate had an RA until it was nicked.

That's what originally started it, somebody trying to sell their car, and just blatantly lying.
Fuel they aren't good on, thats a fact, looks depends on what you like, clio is still a far better choice in this.

I was surprised to hear 220 miles to 46 quid or whatever to be fair lol.
Nah I aint into them (the old ones) - ugly, dated, boring interiors... fast sure but it aint all about that cuz I've got enjoy living with it including going to the pumps lol
Personally I think the Saab is nicer than the Scoob looks wise on the previous page. Don't think I'd have either though.
Someone mentioned MG ZR 160... seem ok performance but bit shit inside quality wise? Mind you I need to face facts I need to make a cast off for 3k lol.
Xsara VTS?

For a near 320 brake car 220 miles to a tank is fair mate...if your expecting anything better then you need a small hot hatch like the clio.
3k???? i'd sayyyyyyyy an MX5.Handling,Driving position, Fun Fun Fun

id go for 106 gti and spend the rest on suspension and performance and come out with a good hot hatch that handles...if not a clio ph2 cat d...dont think realistically ure get a "mint" clio 172 for £3000 mate...its basically what my budget was and brought a Saxo VTS instead fun and so far 90miles out of £42.76...and just gone into the between of full and half full with mixed driving tbh!...not nad cars...fair few problems imo high maintainance really but fun and that...id say sace up more aka £4000-4500 then love into 182's if u want NEW new!

John's right.....you can buy a scooby for nothing these day's and they're heaps of shit.
They're also generally now driven by wee arseholes that think they're rally drivers/ chavs
Do you also wear a burberry cap and trackies with rockports corsa nut?

I kinda like the Civic VTi's... but I'd like go a bit quicker if poss, clio seems to do that for the budget although the Civics prob more reliable lol.
I need be sensible with running costs, mechanical issues etc as can't be spending all me dosh on running it, got other stuff pay for aswell lol

Clio is faster and I assume much newer than the civic?
My clio cost me nothing but service parts to run, spark plugs are expensive but can be had on ebay for 35 quid, cambelt is the other expensive bit.
A standard exhaust isn't cheap, over 200 quid for a center section and backbox.
Hazard light switch is 38 quid, can't think of anything else in normal running that's too bad.

OR

Hmmmmmmmm also yours isn't even close to being new!!!! 51 plate.WOW.

That Saab looks the nuts, one of my neighbours had a Telledega Turbo and it was a bloody Misile!!
As for cheap to run and newness I would recomend a 172 FF servcing is more managable now there are specialists all over the country.
Also on a good run I can get up 45 mpg out of mine so thats not too sad tbh.
However it may be worth noting that the tax banding for the Clio is going to change.

Yeah a lot of the motors I'm looking at post 2001 reg are complete bastards for tax as from April, so hope get sorted by then and have a years "cheap" tax on it lol.
Clio does seem a good alrounder for a day to day car, I really do generally drive 90% town so decent economy is a must as I don't earn loads and got other shit to pay for. Scoob/Evo performance would be unreal...but it's also unrealistic if something expensive goes pop lol.
Will go through this thread and collate a list of me faves

Clio 172 (FF)
Golf 1.8 20 vt
Ibiza Cupra 1.8 20vt
Astra 2.2 SRi with mods of course
Focus ST170 (but would probs be over budget)
Civic VTi
Runner ups as I feel sorry for 'em..
MG ZR 160
Xsara VTS
Stuff like Saxo's, 106's.. great in their own right but not much of an upgrade. Just faster. Mind you possibly a Clio isn't either but damn site quicker out of the box than mine and loads more toys, even if it is lacking a bit of quality with interior build mostly which I'd have to live with. My experience of the external build quality is fine though, car feels tough and solid enough to me, more so than a Corsa. So definitely more so than a Saxo/106, been a couple of funerals now for car crash deaths, it scares me having a weak car
Looked @ A3's, still seem pricey, and I think the Golf has a nicer dash etc. But I'm undecided which looks best exterior wise with nice wheels and a dose of lowerage.
Did look at Puma's also, my missus would rib me though, but a mate brought one for his wife and to be fair it's a fun, chuckable motor!
Think I'm best leaving M3's, Scooby's etc to people who've got money
