I just cant be doing with people who make comments like "P1's are shit" when they havent got a clue what they are on about!!!

Go on..............what is shit about them? What are the major engine failures and why do they fail?

I#ve always thought the P1's to be the "best all rounder" of the scoobies.

22B performance, nearly 22B looks, not quite 22B price tag, but awesome on the roads?

I wouldn't say no.

But you can buy a Type R for cheaper? And you get more for the money!

I'm a massive Subaru fan, but when I was at the hypertec RR day with Track Scotland, we got there a bit early and got speaking to the lads, who told me they had a P1 in getting rebuilt, they just HAD one getting rebuilt, and another coming in

Wrighty, they aren't the same mate...

The P1 doesn't have the water injection for the intercooler, DCCD and a lower ratio gearbox (well, every gear except for 1st). The Type R is the better of the two.

Must be something to do with the way the UK specs are mapped or built then.

It's because they used the EXACT same engine as in the Japanese Type R's... But didn't map them properly to run on UK fuel. Which results in bang unless it's been driven on V-Power (or equivilant) or mapped again to run on 95RON.

Yes...........but when most P1 owners were buying them (like myself) they wanted a UK car that had a warranty and could be serviced by UK main dealers (they wouldnt touch greys)

Everything on the P1 engine was identical to the Type R engine. The P1 had a slightly different map but it still had lean spots when ran on UK fuel. Dont mod them and run them on 99RON with octane booster BUT they still need looking after. Things like oil temp and MAF's

Water spray on the intercooler in the UK climate...........pointless! DCCD is a nice toy but the P1's torque split was set up nicely anyway and how many times are they used in gravel and snow where a DCCD comes into its own? Gearboxes were identical apart from 5th gear............who wants to be doing 4500rpm at 70?

I personally think the P1 is a better car than the Type R for the UK market, but thats just my opinion!

S'pose it is all down to personal opinion matey! But I'm just backing up the fact that they DO go bang. But that may be down to owners not looking after them properly.

Yeah, I agree!

The only thing that annoys me is people coming on just saying they're shit with no back up and knowing nothing!!! Most of these people havent even seen a P1, let alone had first hand experience of them!

To be honest tho, most performance cars have their achillies heel and people forget about that! Look at Evo's, M3's, RS6's,...........Im not even going to mention TVR's and the like!! These kids drive 1.2 Corsas that never break and then try comparing their reliablilty to something with 100 times the technology and 6 times the power!

Exactly, most "experts" have never owned the car in question. Had the same issue when looking for RX7s.

Its threads like this that make CS more and more like the Gti-R owners club.Full of jumped up idiots that think they are better than every1 else.Yes i do drive a corsa, but b4 that ive had many a performance car and do know how to look after them and know what to look out for.If i fancy a car i do some research 1st.Have never owned a scooby and would never own 1.Not because i cant afford 1,purely for the reasons that they go bang.I personally dont trust them.Yous can say its just horror stories but youd be lying to yourselfs and you know it.
Its like folk who say Pulsar gearboxes are shite, even tho they have never owned 1.I have and will admit they are shite so things u hear on the net or from friends can be true. However i can say that i never had problems with mine, purely because it was looked after.Same goes with my mate who owns the fastest Pulsar
in Europe,(iirc)(which was previously owned and built by the above mentioned AWD)which runs app 500bhp on a standard box.Its lasted because it has been looked after.
Scoobys do have strong bottom ends as standard, its when u get some1 who thinks they can just whack on an I/C,fit a bigger fuel pump and turn up the boost, and that makes them safe.WRONG.

My mate had an early RA(yes the lightweight version with CR box, lightweight body panels,I/C spray, diff control etc) and he spent an absolute fortune getting it running right.
