UPDATE
Borrowed a mates car and drove up to Edinburgh last night to see Rachael. Got there around ten o clock after a 2 hour drive. I felt bad as this would be her 2nd Saturday night laid up in bed, so paid to get put on my mates insurance for the weekend, and made the journey up.
She has now developed a slight chest infection. This is due to her lying in the same position for over a week now and she has a slight build up of fluid / gunk in her lungs which is easily sorted. Nothing to worry about really.
She will be moved to another hospital in Edinburgh where they have a better neurological dept to look at her brain injury.
I spoke to the nurse for around half an hour.
I got back around half 12, bought some Nytol and hit the hay.

I maybe mis-wrote that, 'I' spoke to the nurse. Rachaels still in a coma.

I havent read the replies, but I'm really sorry about your girlfriend.
A mate of mine had the same sort of accident. He lost control going around a corner, and his car flipped over and smashed right into a tree. He had severe brain swelling, punctured lungs, broken ribs and a crack on his spinal column. He was sedated at hospital, and doctors were unsure if there was any brain damage... and due to the fact that his spine had a crack, there was a chance he could be paralised from the neck down.
A month later, after the swelling had gone down, he woke up. No lasting damage, apart from the fact that he has to wear a brace around his body to keep his spine straight. This is temporary, and I think he's had it removed. The accident was back in january, and he was home by the start of march.
I'm just saying even though the doctor says it might be permanent, it's not always the case. My mate is fully recovered as far as I know, with just scars to remind him of his accident.

UPDATE
Phoned Edinburgh Western General today, and they say she has started responding to 'pain stimuli' (which im guessing is where they send pain signals to her brain).
They say that when they do a pain stimuli, her hand moves. Not in the direction of the pain, but theres a response there at least!
I was sooo excited when i heard that!!
I know they say 'dont count your chickens before theyve hatched etc etc' but i hope this is her on the mend!!
Plus she is no longer sedated either so its just a case of waking up! Lazy sod is just having a long lye haha.
Again, thanks for the comments folks!
