The scientist who says any black holes will be harmless will have a safe reputation if nothing goes wrong. On the other hand, if it all goes tits up then no-one will be around to say he was wrong anyway so why worry about it.

Bugger forgot about CERN and this machine.
I'm not saying we should be doing everything we can before we die but this should be in everyones minds on the 10th.

Half Life here we come!
I wonder if it's THE Omar and 'crowbar' is a euphamism.

TBH, without the existence of CERN, your keyboard would be useless and this discussion wouldn't be happening.
Curious boffins they may be, but not everything they do is pointless.

People who read the sun should go back under their rocks and not comment on things they know nothing about.
CERN was founded in 1954 and they have had particle accelerators before now, people didn't have a problem with they ones.
Is there anybody left, apart from some sun readers, who think that the world did really start with adam and eve.
AFAIK evolution has been quite comprehensively proven so what exactly will this be proving against religion?
[Edited on 05-09-2008 by John]
Seconded!
I doubt discovering if religion exists is high on their priority list (especially when there is plenty of facts stating that christianity is just a fairytale). It's more of the case of being able to explain current anomalies such as black/worm holes.
And im not sure what people are getting really worried about the whole situation, CERN have created blackholes in the past, and we're all still here!
And John Titor is a great and interesting read, but it's all pretty vague and considering a lot of his predictions haven't come true, eg No more Olympics after 2004 and how there would be a civil war in america after bush's elections, i doubt there's much truth in any of his predictions. And yes he does state CERN worked out how to do time travel, but he stated it would happen in 2001 - on the other hand, i doubt they'd be telling the public if they did discover time travel. Perhaps we have our own Doctor Who's walking amongst us

Surely if they invented time travel we would have known about it since day one

If you think the universe will end when it's turned on you have outed yourself as nothing more than an idiot and you should be shot imo.

Everyone should read Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. That talks of CERN and the Catholic Church, and how science and religion can go hand it hand

People are complaining about them spending 4 billion are clueless about the world economy as well as physics, they bring nothing to the table, to use one of Russ's 'Word of the Day' (tm) they are but proletariats.

I had started typing that before you posted Russ, freaky.
Angels and Demons is a great book, much better than Da Vinci Code.

Thinking about it, the only reason Da Vinci caused so much of a stir was because of sun readers.
People who are able to read would know that he's not the best author ever and there wasn't really very much to get knickers in a twist over.

True. There are much better authors and his twists and turns are very predictable IMHO. even in angels and demons. he defiantly does his homework though

Does it say anywhere how long it's taken to build it? Just looked through all the pics and it's quite impressive. Just wonder what they'll do with it once they're bored of it

Hopefully build a bigger one that costs at least double and has an even higher chance of eating up the universe.

Professor Brian Cox of Manchester University said, “Anyone who thinks the LHC will destroy the world is a t***.”
