A nice 1.4/1.6 MK3 is bloody hard to find, so probably will be MK2 Colin. It's just the age that puts me off!

Found a tidy 1.4,
Link
Just a shame about the black bumpers. Would 100k put anyone off?

Id say go for the mark 3.But hey i have one so some may say im being biast. You can easily get the black bumpers sprayed as that colour of red in a golf isnt difficult to match.
To the milage question 100k isnt much for good vw build quality. One thing id check with a few of the 1.4's is what gearbox is has. Some of them, even though rare, come with a 4 speed box which i would advise you avoid. That ones from personal experience.
Iv got a mrk 3 1.8 driver and its just turned 162000 at the weekend there and still going strong so tbh i wouldnt be worried about it only just hitting 100k
hope that helps

Cheers mate. Did you own a Corsa at all? I'd like to hear from people that drove both. I've emailed the seller asking about the gearbox, and want to check it out sometime this week.

Ive got a 2.0 Gti and i can honestly say its the best car i have owned by a mile.
Its by no means quick but is solid, over enginnered.
I wont go back now thats for sure.
I know it might sound biased but if you drive a 306 then a Golf your mind would be made up in an instant.
Couple of pics of mine.......

if your include GTIs and rallyes in that statement i disagree, my mate had a Mk3 and Mk4 golf gti and it handled nowhere near as well as my pug. More solid but not as good handling, quick, or fun.
* lesser models such as 1.4 are shite, dont even bother unless its the GTi/Rallye or XSi/S16 dont bother

The 1.4 isnt really as bad as everyone may have said to you.You can get a 1.4 and really make it look exactly like a gti or whatever. When buying one though try and find one with as many extras as you can find.Saves sortn things out like having to fit in electric windows when you could get them in the first place after looking for a while.
To the handling issue, yes maybe they do have some body roll when standard but if you are looking to do it up a bit and say lower it then it sort of sorts that issue out. Iv got mine lowered 45mm and it handles like its on rails.
Heres what my 1.8 now looks like after some time and money.

I was only talking about a GTi as a matter of course.
Topshot - dont disbelieve it - but for everyday driving - sorry it cant be beaten in terms of build quality and confindence that it wont let me down!

i've owned both a corsa and a peugeot, although not a 306 (had a 106 which is much the same car scaled down) also owned other french cars and would never go back! i loved the corsa to bits and was a lot of fun but i now own a golf vr6 and in terms of build quality its untouchable with either a pug or the corsa!

the 306 GTI/VTs engine is proven and very strong/reliable not even comparable to the 106 gti, honestly drive one and see for yourself.
Teddy- yes i agree golf is solid/reliable and i would have one, i just fell in love with the 306 GTi-6's subtle looks and fun/sporty ride
End of the day drive a few, then decide, dont make a decision based on here

I honestly don't mind about speed. Anything will be better than the 1.0 12v Corsa I'm currently rocking.
I've been looking for an SE version but 3drs are hard enough to find as it is, let alone specific models!
In terms of stlying I'd much rather have the Golf than the 306, 306 may look much more modern but a unique euro styled Golf is something else.

I'm gonna try sell mine for around 1500. So looking at about £1000 which will leave me with a nice amount left to tidy it up. I would like to find a standard one..
