The fact it's a tv show means it is setup, it doesn't make a comedian an less funny when he goes up on stage, or coronation street less dramatic when someone dies.
It's entertainment fed to the public the way the producers want you to take it, you either embrace it or get upset they seem to be being too light hearted about your hobby i.e. cars.

You don't have to study media at uni to be able to tell a setup tbh.

Well, Marketing & Media Practices actually. So sociology, psychology, everything mixed into it
John - you'll be amazed at the amount of people that can't tell what is a set-up and not. They just take it for granted.

That is quite good, explaining how/why they record in the way they do.

That funny box thing you can see on the Bugatti’s sunvisor is a Bluetooth handsfree device that syncs to your phone. It had to be added to the car because Jeremy needed to talk to the other two while driving, but despite having worked on the car for over five years, the Bugatti engineers weren’t sure if the Veyron had a Bluetooth phone system.

Hammer, a comedian is good at comedy, an actor is good at acting, JC is good at reviewing cars with light hearted sarcasm, he is not a comedian, and he is not an actor which is why its too easy to see through it all.

In your opinion that is, the majority however believe he is better at doing what he is doing in the format that we see it just now. The figures don't lie, the BBC are there to provide entertainment to the majority, not the minority.

The vast majority of it is setup.
Really? whats your source of info?
Assumption. I'll stick my neck out and say its obvious.
The race in Liverpool jumped about all over the city. The studio conversation is not spontaneous. Hammond gives this away as he's the worst actor.
Clarkson has also openly admitted it for what it's worth.

I watch it, so I'm contributing to the majority. Every week I long for something genuinely interesting and funny.
I don't like being told a car has 400 torques. They're called foot pounds or newton metres. I can't be alone.

The fact this debate is taking place on a car forum explains a lot tbh, I wouldn't expect the dumming down of stuff like that to appeal to enthusiasts.
I find it genuinely funny though I have no explanation for that other than I just do.

Its 99% scripted. Even what sounds like a bit of adlibbing is normally scripted.
Having attended rehursals before the show everything that happens in the studio is practiced word for word.

I think top gear has gone the same way as maxim/FHM.
A few years ago maxim/FHM were a good read with some tasty women to fill the mag out.....now they seem to be all TAA
Similarly Top gear has gone from a car review programme to nearly almost only 'stunts'
I'd prefer the bias was back to cars you an buy to be honest

It probably is all scripted but it's still funny so it doesn't matter. I like the fact that they do stupid challenges and clearly there is a bit of poetic licence where TV is involved. It's an entertaining programme. With the internet and everything facts and stats are readily available at the touch of a button but you can't blast a Robin Reliant into the air using the internet!

I can see the reason for not paying much regard to the power figures - in a modern fast car it doesn't really matter what it says on paper. Its either fast or fast. I don't pay much regard to power figures - I would rather drive a car.
I do however think its an editorial oversight to be so far away from fact and figures than you condescending ignore the unit of measurement in an attempt at humour.

Its entertaining, but annoyingly staged
As Ian said its so obvious at times, especially when Hammond gives it away

I think the whole Torques issue is a tongue in cheek thing, as I remember an episode when the concept of 'Torques' was first bought up and JC seemed to get confused over what it meant. I'm sure when they say it now it's just a small piss take.
I could be completely wrong though and they are genuinely ignorant to it.

Obviously they don't have enough footage. I just don't know why in a group test about coupes they need to play golf, badly.
Train crash he talks about jackets.
Everything is squeezed for as much entertainment value as possible. Its cars, its boring, live with it as most of the readership will.

It's what people want to see though therefore the producers are doing their job? Most people watching would let 450 lb/ft fly over their head i think, they're not setting their sky plus so they can find out how much torque the latest Mercedes has, they're doing it to be entertained.

I think it goes a bit too far, the jokes are needed, but writing comedy is quite hard. At the moment they are not using any wit.

Every single person slating the direction the show is going in is extremely interested in cars by the looks of things so there's no winning here
Like i've said before there are other specialist routes to go down if you want information on cars i.e. a certain corsa forum, a prime time bbc show is not where you want to be if you get anal about 'torques'
