House rules are about maintaining a level of respect for your folks IMO.
My parents dont smoke/drink (much)/shag random strangers, so those were pretty much the rules they laid down.
Think of it this way, what rules would you lay down to your lodger if you owned a house?
I took on a lodger a few years back and i can clearly remember what rules I laid down. One was pay your rent on time, the other was that if he brought a woman home he should bring me one too 
I pretty quickly changed those and added quite a few too....
