Im going to guess it'll rise per mile depending what car you drive, if not then current £400+ yearly tax payers will be happier than the cheapos paying £100 odd.

it's not that bad
£600 a year if you do the average of 12000 miles per year.
I'm currently paying £115 road tax
yeah sorry, i was only basing that on my work mileage which is 5 miles each way, so 50 miles a week.
2400 miles per year 120 quid if it was 5p per mile. better than the current 230 quid tax.
my calculations are only estimates though, as cosmo said, the price probably rises on the car you have, when you use it etc etc.

But then owning a car will be simply just for driving to and from work and no other reason, those of us on this forum tend to own cars as they enjoy driving.
What happens on track days etc?
It's horrendous it really is. We need someone to shoot down the satalites.

Id imagine track days are classed as driving on private land, therefore wouldnt incur a cost. Much like if you had a 2 mile driveway, you wouldnt be charged for driving on your own land...surely!!?
Paul, why are you worried anyway? You could just jump on your bike and have a kip whilst you ride to work!!

The Galileo GPS project is underway.. Once its active the government will be ITCHING to use it for things like road-charging and population tracking.
On the bright side a GPS system is open to all sorts of attack methods, the signal from the satelites is so damn weak jamming it would be a doddle.

The time has come for me to move to the Alps and just keep goats as company.
Give me a library of books and I will be content, I can't cope with this intrusion into my life any longer.

If the tax on petrol was dropped that would make it fair..
But then people could come to the UK from over the channel and fill up for cheap!

My parents driveway is on maps. They better not charge for that

...Also I would imagine this would conincide with new EU regs for car manufacturers so they would have to build the tracking hardware into the car which would also mean older cars wouldnt be tracked

They'd bump the road tax right up on older cars to make up for it, they wouldn't let there be a way around it

Meh it's all open to hacking, will be reet.
People will just start to spend small fortunes on keeping older cars on the road now.

Do none of you agree that some of the cars need to be got off the roads though?
Get the kids WALKING to school again, like old days? Get people who have <2 miles to work use alternative methods? We are a lazy society.
Every morning I see 4x4's/530s/E320s carrying one person plus child for hardly any distance.

That's what they said about the speeding system, points and speed cameras...
How many hacks get you off the hook?

And I'd rather live near work than drive for 45+ mins every morning.

Im sure it will be an MOT requirement for all old cars so eventually you would need one.
Can't say I like the idea of it, I do a 70 miles commute

Its all scare mongery - it won't happen for a long time yet, not saying it wont happen but it'll take FOREVER to implement this on a national scale.

That's what you think, anything they can make money on you will notice can be implemented very quickly.

If my next door neighbour wants to drive her kids half a mile up the road to school in a 4x4 let her get on with it.

The alternative for me compared with riding my scooter for the 15 minute journey to work is an hour bus journey with the bus full of college students, single mothers and scumbags.
This bus journey for a return costs £3.40 a DAY!! I can commute between my house and work and go home at lunch on my scooter for £7.00 a week.
Please tell me exactly how this is going to benefit in any way shape or form.

Your not wrong re: buses being a rip off!!
I was horrified to find that an adult return from the bottom of the road into the shops in the next town is a fiver now days!! Ive not been on a public bus in around 10 years but I found that totally shocking!! It would be cheaper to make the trip in my M3 going 1st gear all the way lighting the back wheels up!!
