Compared to always 40 upwards, sometimes 50+ in my diesel and its actually not that far off the performance of the petrol! I'll admit probably not as fun as the petrol but if all I cared about was fun and not the rest of the stuff I'd of bought a hot hatch of some sort. The petrol A3 is actually more expensive to buy too (only by a small margin)
haveing driven a mapped bora and a astra gsi back to back there not that exciting, in terms of speed they were pritty much on par, but the astra felt more fun to drive hard. noise may of helped.

id never pick i derv as a fun car though. day to day you just cant fault it though.

Yeah I'd agree with that.

Something like a CTR is probably nice to really wring its neck all the way to 9,000 rpm when you are in the mood for it but coming from this would probably feel a bit gutless when driving normally. Not sure if I could live with one or not now I'm used to the derv.

When I filled up earlier petrol was at 100.9 and diesel was 100.9!!!
Which is a saving of 227!

Alot of VAG engines produce more than book figure as standard

Think most the PD130 engines are between 140 - 150

I've started doing some of the Hyper-Miling techniques in day to day driving and my A3 1.8TSport (petrol) is achieving an average mpg of 46.4mpg over the last 1000miles.

Calculated for my astra coupe turbo average 27mpg using the same figures for fuel costs I would make a saving of £760 a year. Thought this was interesting to see what a more realistic petrol MPG would achieve

When comparing mpg, you have to compare like for like, exactly how MattyG is doing.

Compare a 535d BMW to 535i BMW. I know what will be better on mpg and save fuel on, let alone tax etc etc.

However yes, diesels are more to buy in the first place. . .but if you have the money, why not?!

All depends on what you need for a car. My daily commute is likely to be less than 20miles. If I bought a 1.3CDTi Corsa, it'd cost me £35/tax (if I bought the right year), 1 tank would last me nearly 1 month, and I wouldn't be going any slower than the luxury cruisers in the 50mph traffic queue.

If that was the case I wouldn't GAF about MPG, as diesels sound like shit I'd rather have 20 less mpg, and actually enjoy driving my car. Obviously others get a buzz out of how much money they save, but they are the same people I'd rather chop my ball off, then go out for a drink with them

i'm with Deano having had a 12v for two yrs i didnt see anything less than 45mpg!

as for price comparison yes you save the fuel but the service costs are more, the inital cost is greater and after reading Honest John's column in the Telegraph iirc he stated that a derv has to be owned for 3 yrs to break even, 4 yrs to make any saving when you take into account all financial factors (tax, insurance, service, parts, depreciation etc)

The 1.6JTD Mito (which I'm buying becuase it is a fantastic all round car, power and economy) is the same to buy as the same-powered 1.4 Turbo 120.

Insurance is generally cheaper on Derv's than the power equivilent petrol. Also tax is generally around the same or less too. If buying used, theres not much difference in price between derv and petrol

agred the 120i is slower thanthe 120d - cheaper to tax and there was little cost in purchase price

I drive my car pretty hard and struggle to get below 45mpg and approx 510 to a 51 litre tank

If I did that in petrol i would be less than 30mpg for sure

depends really on mileage a year

they dont feel gutless just not as quicke as when your pushing 8500 rpm

They feel like they have very little inertia in the engine

They do normally put out more than quoted power.

The newer PD's aren't quite as on and off as the old ones either and even so, i've never found it a problem, you just don't drive it like a petrol and it's fine.

I enjoy driving my diesel but at the same time I sometimes miss my VTS I had beforehand. theres also times when I think "thank fuck I got rid of the VTS"

At the time I bought my diesel I couldnt get anything with the same power for the same price for insurance considering I was 19. Isnt anything to do with saving money, I just always said id never pay over the odds for insurance cause I dont see the point.

And my diesels driven flat out alot of the time, never look at mpg
