my car tells me to use 98 ron stuff, it usually gets BP ultimate (which is 97) as its convenient for me to fill it at BP, whereas it isn't convenient for me to run to the shell garage etc

My old Pulsar was mapped to run on higher octane fuel(jap import) but when it was taken on track it was filled with £15 of V-power and 2 jerry cans worth of normal.Didnt make a blind bit of difference to it with the 95ron fuel in it.
Although i wouldnt recomend running a car mapped to run higher octane fuel on normal 95ron just incase.

my golf was mapped when it had v power in so I only use v power or bp ultimate now,
put morrisons 95 ron in it one day as I was really skint, there was a big difference. car just felt boring and slow, filled it up with v power and was fine again.

Really? The car felt 'boring and slow?' best get it booked into the garage then because if the loss of maybe 3-4 hp somewhere on the rev range was down to the fuel choice you must have a serious problem somewhere else!
Its all in your mind, it makes very little difference - esp as the quality is far from consistent. a more noticeable fuel would have been tesco 99 but even then it would take 2-3 tanks for it to have completely washed the old stuff away for a true comparison...

I didnt like the 99ron from tescos, felt it gave back poor mpg aswell,
could have been in my head but the difference was noticable enough for me to never use he stuff again lol

For a fuel to be pure in your system you need to run at least 3 full tanks of it.
Fuels seldom affect mpg too, if anything super unleaded fuels are less volatile so in theory more of the higher octane fuel will need to be used to create the same bang.
i hate these super fuel discussions anyway - joe public cant tell the difference between them, he just thinks he can to justify the extra cost of them. Only in racing does it actually matter.
If super fuels were just that damn good, then surely every new petrol engine would be designed to run on solely super unleaded and petrol companies wouldnt sell regular unleaded anymore as it would be deemed sub standard.
engines are desinged to run on fuels ranging from under 90 ron upto around 102 ron as different areas of the world have different quality fuels so engines must be able to cope with these variables.
